Which Window Tint Darkness Is Right For You?

Choosing a window tint shade isn't always just about looks. You should also consider comfort, visibility and make sure to comply with local automotive window tinting laws.

Our window tinting experts can help find the right shade of window tint for you!

Our Most Popular Window Tint Shades

🛈 Window tint shades (darkness) are measured in VLT (Visible Light Transmission) — the percentage of light that a window tint film allows to pass through a window. The lower the VLT %, the darker the tint.

  • 5% VLT (Limo Tint)

    • A very dark option that only lets 5% of light pass through the window.
    • Provides maximum privacy and a dramatic appearance.
    • Common for limousines, privacy vehicles and rear windows.
    • ⚠ Not legal on front windows in most areas

  • 20% VLT (Dark Tint)

    • A popular choice for a dark appearance with great privacy.
    • Reduces glare and blocks a significant amount of heat while allowing some visibility into the vehicle during daylight.
    • ⚠ Not legal on front windows in most areas

  • 35% VLT (Medium Tint)

  • 50% VLT (Light Tint)

🛈 Tip: Ontario's window tinting laws require that front windows (windshield, driver & passenger) allow a minimum 70% visible light transmission (VLT). Darker tint is allowed on rear windows (some conditions apply).

Is Automotive Window Tint Legal In Ontario?

Yes, tinted windows are legal in the province of Ontario. However, some conditions apply, so it's important to understand the laws that regulate how dark window tint can be — especially on front windows and windshields.

The Ontario Highway Traffic Act outlines specific rules that regulate how dark window tint can be — especially on front windows and windshields.

Our window tinting experts can help you choose a tint shade that not only looks great but also complies with local laws, so you can avoid fines and safety issues.

  • Windshields

No aftermarket tint is allowed. A strip along the top (eyebrow or sun strip) is permitted, as long as it does not extend more than 75 mm (3 inches) down from the top.

  • Front Side Windows

Tint can't block more than 30% of light. This means your front side windows (driver & passenger) must allow at least 70% Visible Light Transmission (VLT).

  • Rear Side Windows

Any tint darkness is allowed. There are no restrictions for tinting rear side windows, as long as your vehicle has functioning mirrors on both sides.

  • Rear View Windows

Any tint darkness is allowed. There are no restrictions for tinting rearview windows, as long as your vehicle has functioning mirrors on both sides.
