Which Window Tint Darkness Is Right For You?

Choosing a window tint shade is about more than just looks. You should also consider comfort, visibility and make sure to comply with window tint laws. Our window tinting experts can help you find the perfect shade!

Window tint shades are measured in VLT (Visible Light Transmission) — the amount of light that a tint film allows to pass through. The lower the VLT %, the darker the tint.

  • 5% VLT (Darkest Option)

    • Our darkest option that allows 5% of light pass through the window.
    • Provides maximum privacy and a dramatic appearance.
    • Common for limousines, privacy vehicles and rear windows.

  • 20% VLT (Dark Tint)

    • A popular choice for a dark appearance with good privacy.
    • Reduces glare and blocks a significant amount of heat while allowing some visibility into the vehicle during daylight.

  • 35% VLT (Medium Tint)

    • A balanced option, dark enough to provide privacy and light enough for clear night time visibility.
    • A good mix of heat rejection and style.
    • Darkest legal option.

  • 50% VLT (Light Tint)

    • A subtle shade that allows plenty of natural light through the window.
    • Cuts glare without a heavily tinted appearance.
    • Ideal for drivers who want comfort over darkness.

Automotive window tint laws vary by province. In Ontario, window tint is not permitted on the windshield and must allow at least 70% light transmission through the driver and front passenger windows. Rear windows may have darker tint levels if the vehicle is equipped with both side mirrors.

All automotive window tint installations are performed at the customer’s request and discretion. While we provide general guidance based on current regulations, it is the vehicle owner’s responsibility to ensure their vehicle remains in compliance with applicable laws and safety standards. Visual Vinyl & Print is not liable for fines, inspection failures or penalties resulting from window tint film applied outside of legal limits. By booking an installation, the customer acknowledges understanding of these regulations and accepts full responsibility for their tint selection.

Is Window Tint Legal in Ontario?

Yes. Automotive Window Tint is permitted in the province of Ontario. However, the Ontario Highway Traffic Act stipulates regulations — specifically on front windows and windshields.

  • Windshield

A strip along the top (eyebrow or sun strip) is permitted, as long as it does not extend more than 75 mm, or 3 inches down from the top of the windshield.

  • Driver & Passenger Windows

Front driver & passenger windows must allow at least 70% visible light transmission.

  • Rear Side Windows

There are no restrictions for tinting rear side windows, as long as the vehicle is equipped with functioning mirrors on both sides.

  • Rearview Window

There are no restrictions for tinting rearview windows, as long as the vehicle is equipped with functioning mirrors on both sides.
